So I took some summer classes to get ahead a little bit and for a general education class I took a music class and it required this book. New is a pretty expensive price for the book (even though new you do get the listening guide CD's). Luckily, my teacher but the songs online for us to listen too so I went with the rental price instead (which in my state and at the time was $18) with prime 2-day shipping. Shipping was great as usual (I mean it is amazon!!!). Packaging was great too!! However I should not that the RENTAL does NOT come with the listening guide CD's. Those only come with the new copy of the book.The book itself is great! I love music and although it isn't my field of study/major it gives a good and rich history of not only the origins of all kinds of music but also a great explanation of the basics from the fundamentals of music to learning too read sheet music. Tells of many great musicians and the vocab is very easy to follow and the subjects are organized in specific and easy to follow manner. Overall great book!!! Whether you need it for a class or just wanna learn about music, the history, and some of the greatest musicians of all time I would for sure pick this up!

According to the other reviews, I've been told there's no CD that comes with renting the book. Maybe it's not included with the eBook version, but I'm very disappointed that there wasn't a clear sign that said I wasn't going to get access to the Listening Guides, which are important to my class's assignments.
My daughter needed the CD that went with this as well. We returned it unused for 1/3 the price paid. If it had the CD it would have been a great buy. Check before buying if that is required.
Disappointed since the heading says 3 CD-set- but no CD’s included. Of course, you have to look with a fine tooth comb afterwards to see that supplemental materials might not be included. So then why advertise “3 CD-set”, if not CD’s come with.
Great book! Just be sure to pay good attention to chapter two when it describes all the music lingo. I had no music experience prior to this book and I was able to follow along easily and learn new concepts about music without a formal background.
This book is pretty dull. Maybe reading music is not my thing, but I have read music theory texts as well as some pure music history courses. I imagine it as being excellent as a reference book, but unless it is supplemented by good instruction, it is pretty rough. I should note I already had more than enough experience for my general music course, so while I'm no musician or scholar, I know enough to say the text also has a somewhat odd explanation of some of the music basics and at time is lacking or unclear.
Overall, it's more like a 3.5 star, but I feel giving it a 4 star would not give people the right idea. General music books aren't know as being enjoyable or particularly good (AFAIK), so from that perspective it is quite good.
Bought this book to take the last course I needed for my degree.
I enjoyed the book and the course a heck of a lot more than even I thought I would! I did get an A in the course so I was happy.
We did not use the entire book for the course....but, I READ the entire book because it was well written, informative and easy
to understand. Really broadened my musical horizons!
You don't need to be taking a course to enjoy this book just for the joy of reading it and learning something about music along
the way!
